MILTOOLS are a set of staff officer planning tools that can be integrated with MILSIM.  MILTOOLS take advantage of the fact that the entities within the simulation are driving over the same (simulated) terrain and fighting the same (simulated) forces that the real forces would encounter.  Therefore the simulated forces expend roughly the same quantities of fuel and ammunition and take a similar amount of time to traverse terrain as the real forces would.  MILTOOLS act as a check and balance for existing staff planning tables and present the information in an easy-to-use graphical format.

Available Planning Tools
  • Movement Over Terrain Analysis
MILTOOLS makes use of digital terrain data to conduct a terrain analysis to predict the size of force which can make use of the terrain.  The user enters in the line of contact and direction of enemy advance.  Once this is complete, MILTOOLS will complete the calculation.
  • Course-of-Action Analysis
The course-of-action (COA) analysis tool allows the user to enter in multiple courses of action for both the friendly and enemy forces.  The user can then run the program in faster than real-time using different combinations of friendly and enemy options. The results of the different combinations are shown in tabular format giving the user results such as estimated enemy and friendly casualties, vehicle status and final positions.
  • Logistical Analysis
The logistical analysis tool is similar to the course of action tool except that the output gives usage rates of various consumables such as fuel and ammunition.
  • Vehicle Intelligence Database
The vehicle intelligence database allows the user to search the OPFOR vehicle database for all known specialized vehicles..  For instance, when an unusual vehicle is sighted during operations, the user can search and view all instances where that vehicle occurs in the enemy TO&E.  This assists with Intel planning and allows for faster analysis of the enemy picture.
  • Templates
Enemy and friendly templates for all phases of war can be overlaid on the map screen to assist with analysis of current situation. Templates of enemy and friendly weapons ranges can also be laid out on the map screen for analysis.
  • Route Planning
The route planning tool is used to calculate the distribution of vehicles across packets and/or serials.  The user selects the route and waypoints to be followed by a specific unit within the TO&E.  The user then inputs the vehicle minimum and maximum spacing and time in which the unit is to clear the route.  The route planning tool then determines the best distribution of vehicles across the serials, serial size and average speed
